Dear Cancer, I love you.
Not when I was thirty years old, but I sure do now.
I will never forget hearing the words, “You have cancer.” I can still remember where I was standing, the date, and even the time of day when the doc first uttered those words to me. The first few weeks after learning the news were filled with fear, negativity, loss, and confusion. I was convinced I was going to flat out die. I took the negative route in order to cope. I cried. I screamed. I cursed. I couldn’t believe it could happen to me. Not healthy, little, vegetarian me. Sure, maybe the guy who eats fast food and smokes all of the time, but certainly not me.
Growing up riding horses in rural Northern California on a 5 acre farm, I had always been taught that if I fell off my horse I had to get right back on. I learned the cowgirl mentality at a young age. Little did I know that twenty years later I would actually put this way of life to use. Part of being a cowgirl is the attitude. Dale Evans said it best: “Cowgirl is a spirit, a special brand of courage. The cowgirl faces life head on, lives by her own lights, and makes no excuses. Cowgirls take stands. They speak up. They defend the things they hold dear.” This is the very spirit that I took head on with the diagnosis.
Being the “crunchy granola” type, I went on a quest for non-traditional cancer treatments and was lead in an unexpected direction that included raw vegan foods, positive thinking and what I call a “yeehaw” attitude. I changed my thoughts. I changed my diet. And I put my cowgirl boots on.
I underwent a total of five surgeries, four treatments of chemotherapy, six weeks of radiation and now walk the earth with one fewer ta-ta than I came in with. The process wasn’t easy, but I kept up that cowgirl mentality anyway. I wore my cowgirl boots to every appointment, every blood draw, every ride through the noisy MRI machine and if the surgeon would have let me, they would have been on my feet in the operating room as well. Symbolically my boots were like my very own Superwoman cape- my magic shield of armor.
During one of my treatments I was reminded of a time on my horse when I fell off. Instead of getting back on like I had been taught, I gave up and walked home. After showing off my new bald head to the nurses and staff while on the throne o’ chemo, I had temporarily forgotten about my needle phobia, stuck out my arm to the nurse and said “give it to me, I was made for this stuff.” This time, I was stronger. I got back on the horse.
It is true, Cancer, I do love you. You have taught me to fear less. To love more. To forgive. To give up my limitations. You have introduced me to community, to new adventures, a to life worth fully living. You have reminded me of what it truly means to embrace the cowgirl spirit. You have taught me how to be me. And for that, I thank you.

About Kayle:
Once a cowgirl, always a cowgirl!
Kayle Martin grew up in Grass Valley in the heart of Northern California’s Gold Country, romping through wildflowers, climbing trees, swimming in creeks, riding horses and caring for a slew of animals on a five-acre farm with her single mom.
A lover of nature and animals for as long as she can remember, Kayle became a vegetarian in the 6th grade after her beloved cow, Cupcake, ended up on her dinner plate.
Years later, after being diagnosed with breast cancer at the ripe young age of thirty, Kayle made the transition from a vegetarian to a vegan diet. She has been living an animal-free lifestyle for nearly five years and is totally cancer free!
She shares her cancer story with others at conferences and on radio programs, is working on her first book, and was recently featured as the “Survivor Story” in Keep A Breast’s magazine.
Kayle’s free time is spent juicing greens, counseling newly diagnosed breast cancer patients at her local hospital, seeking out new vegan restaurants, blogging and living a life full of F-U-N! You can find out more information about Kayle and read her blog by visiting her website Cowgirls & Collard Greens: www.cowgirlsandcollardgreens.com
Hi everyone!
It’s been a while since I last blogged about my personal fitness journey so I thought I would update all of you.
On September 4th I decided that I would sign-up for Christy Morgan’s (aka The Blissful Chef) 28-day Wellness Reboot program because I was stuck in a cooking rut. I was either making the same meals all the time or eating heavily processed foods from TJ for convenience purposes.
I’ve been working out constantly about 5 times per week for the last 3 months and wasn’t really losing weight, so I thought I would give this program a try.
I couldn’t have started at a better time because I recently injured my knee and my doctor told me that I can’t spin more than twice a week and I can’t push myself too hard until I get the results from my MRI.
This also means that I’ve had to stop my training for the Warrior Dash that I signed-up for on October 26th. It’s been really hard dealing with all of this because I actually LOVE spinning and was really getting into running.
I tend to gain weight really easily if I don’t work out a lot, so it’s a really good thing that I’m doing the program. I’ve lost 3lbs in just a week and I’m not starving myself (in fact I can never finish my meals!), and best of all the food is great! Christy has really put a lot of thought and effort into the program. There is a shopping list that you print out every week to take with you to the store and it lists all the ingredients you will need for the week. You don’t need to follow the plan exactly, you can mix and match, or eat leftovers the next day until you finish everything. I highly recommend the program to anyone who wants to lose weight, feel better, and try out some new recipes. There is also an exercise component to it, but I haven’t looked into it since I have my own thing going on.
I can’t wait to meet Christy in person at the expo to thank her for putting together such an amazing program!
Hope to see you there, I’d love to hear all about our fitness journey.

One of the biggest problems I hear from folks is not having time for healthy eating, that they don’t have enough space in their life to support their goals. Which is why it’s so vital to have healthy recipes that are fast, cheap and portable like this breakfast cake. Super filling, got a kick of caffeine, lots of protein to start your day off strong as well as killer taste and durability. Round your breakfast out with Chia Clementine Mixed Berry Jam on the cake and a Shake if you’ve got the time. Also try a teaspoon of jam swirled into the top of the cake before baking for grab and go jam experience.
1/4 + 2 TBS c Chickpea Flour
1/4 c Mocha Protein
1/2 tea Instant Espresso
2 TBS Quick Cook Oats
2/3 c Almond Milk (if it feels to thick just splash a bit more in)
2 tea Baking Powder
1 tea Vanilla
1/2 tea Cinnamon
1.5 tea Almond Butter
***
1 TBS Shredded Coconut
2 TBS Frozen Blueberries
Combine all ingredients except coconut and blueberry with a whisk then pour into a non stick skillet (with a metal handle, the smell of melting plastic just doesn’t have the same appeal…) or use a non stick muffin tin. Then sprinkle the blueberries over the top and smooth it all down with a spatula. Sprinkle the coconut over the top evenly and cook for 18-21 (15/18 for muffins) minutes or until when you push your finger (gently!) on the middle of the cake it feels firm. Let sit on a cooling rack once out for 3 – 5 minutes and the edges should pull away from the sides, now just run a butter knife around the edge then flip the pan over onto the rack the move to a cutting board and serve warm.

Holly has been vegan for a good many years now but didn’t get into it for the health benefits. That all came later. It all began growing up in the food industry, heavily inspired by her father, grand mother and their traditional styles, learning to twist t
hem into healthier, plant based, versions. Once foundations got solidly laid, fear became obsolete, and she became bolder, finding new ways to expand the possibilities with plant based food.
Along the way Holly worked at the famed Cafe Gratitude that changed her vision of food, sweets, raw food and health. Then went on to start the first business, the original Liberation Foods, a whole sale vegan bakery out of
Oakland, CA that was dispersed to move to Seattle to work at such renowned restaurants as Sutra, Thrive and Cafe Flora. She also has done many events and classes, guest lectured at the Art Institute of Seattle, written columns on food and music for AMP magazine as well as food, fitness and recipes for various blogs and websites including her own. Through teaching she met and coached individuals on how to use alkalizing lifestyle change to cure their cancers and disease while using diet and lifestyle to cure her own ailments. While in Seattle, Holly joined an awesome team and created Vegan Shortcake, an ongoing cooking and lifestyle show. However, a California girl at heart and the sun beckoned, so she returned to the Bay Area started the new Liberation Food and Lifestyle, began teaching for Whole Foods as well as becoming certified in Plant Based Nutrition from eCornell to solidify abilities to join food, flavor and wellness. She is dedicated to teaching how to rid ourselves of the perception of what can and cannot be done, not only in food, but also when it comes to improving all that we see around us.
I am really excited to announce that Local Love / Sanctuary Bistro will be making the breakfast (which will be 100% vegan) for VIP ticket holders!
