4 things you probably didn’t know about Home Chef Competitor Charlie:
1. He has webbed toes.
2. He’s seen Britney Spears in concert ten times and met her once.
3. Mandy Patinkin is his cousin, but he’s never met him (so unfortunately he won’t be at the event lol)
4. He once competed as a member of the Sorbonne gymnastics team.
5. Special bonus because Charlie loves going the extra mile:) His favorite hot sauce is called Ring of Fire.
Come and cheer for Charlie at the event!!
4 Things People May Not Know About Pro Chef Maria!
1. She is the youngest of 8 kids!!!
2. She lived in Berlin for 4 months
3. Maria has a degree in Conservation Biology and worked at Grand Canyon and Crater Lake National Park
4. Her favorite food is bing cherries, yummm!
4 things people might not know about Kristin:
1. Next to planning outings around food-spotting, I LOVE to dance. I will dance at anytime, anywhere. I enjoy it so much, that I even compete in ballroom dance contests (tango, waltz, and salsa).
2. I went to college for Equestrian Studies. I grew up with horses, from the time I was eight and on through college. For the longest time I wanted to be the next horse whisperer.
3. I have an affinity for little things. Like baby sized clothing, teeny tiny animals (like, really little), and mini ketchup bottles, teacups, and the like. They make me “squee” every time.
4. I’m a full-time nomad. I haven’t stopped traveling since the fall of 2011. Sometimes I am in one place for a few weeks or a few months, but I work from my computer and prefer a mobile lifestyle to that of one that’s more settled.

And your next competitors are… Home Chef Charlie and Pro Chef Kevin (Veg 388)
You might recognize Charlie as emcee and participant from previous events, and we’re looking forward to seeing his creations this year. By day, Charlie crunches numbers for a homeless nonprofit in San Francisco, and by night he dances and sings in musical theater around the Bay Area. But in his spare time, he loves to cook and bake. His special interests include fried foods, artisan vegan cheese, and punchbowl cakes. A vegan for over ten years, he won the Holiday Dessert Contest at his last workplace two years in a row. Favorite local meals include the king trumpet mushrooms at Millennium, the Reuben sandwich at Nature’s Express, and the fritters at Donut Farm. Charlie lives in San Francisco and is proud to take care of the two cutest and sweetest dogs in the world, Fajita and Tortilla.
Kevin has been cooking professionally in the Bay Area for 8 years. His first job was at Millennium Restaurant, where he spent a year and a half.
From then, the sommelier of Millennium asked him to be the chef of Yield Wine Bar, which was a great success, and he went on to open Pause Wine Bar as well.
From then, he wanted to expand his knowledge and skills, and went on to cook for Takashi Saito at Izakaya Yuzuki, at AQ restaurant, and at Bouli Bar in San Francisco.
He has now stepped back into the chef role, and started Veg 388, which is a 5 night a week vegan/vegetarian popup at Veg388 in Oakland, CA.
We’re proud to announce that Colleen Holland of VegNews fame will be joining us again as a judge for Vegan Iron Chef, and we welcome Tommy from Field Roast and Kristin from Will Travel For Vegan Food as a first-time judges this year. We know your job of tasting delicious vegan food is hard, but someone’s got to do it!
Passionate about publishing and marketing, Colleen Holland is the co-founder of VegNews. From the company’s humble beginnings in 2000, she grew the vegan lifestyle brand into an award-winning, international media company complete with a flagship magazine, digital properties, events, e-cookbooks, and global vacations. A graduate of UCLA and the Natural Gourmet Institute, Colleen is one of just six people worldwide to have been elected into both the Vegetarian Hall of Fame and the Animal Rights Hall of Fame—honors which she says are her greatest achievements. A 19-year ethical vegan, she is a die-hard foodie and yogi. - via The Vegan Taste
Competitors, take note: according to her VegNews Bio, Colleen’s favorite meal involves a steaming bowl of laksa soup, a Malaysian specialty with tofu, rice noodles, greens, and cilantro in a fragrant coconut broth. Yum!
Tommy McDonald is Food Service Sales Manager, and Culinary Ambassador for The Field Roast Grain Meat Co. Before working for Field Roast, Tommy spent seven years working for the United States’ largest natural food Co-operative, PCC Natural Markets, developing new food programs, and teaching culinary courses at the IACP’s number one “Avocational Cooking School in America”.
